I can't imagine how he could suffer from taking the course online - except for
the quality of the instruction and the exercises involved. Most of us have
learned by doing, and as long as he learns how to write somehow, that ought to
be enough.
Of course, you don't mention what your friend's objective is. Does he want to
pursue technical writing as a career, or just use technical writing in some
other field?
