I asked the same question a few years ago and got what I think
was a good answer: when you try to encode information into
the document number, you are setting yourself up for headaches
because there will always be mistakes, exceptions, and
miscellaneous problems. Other people aren't going to
understand the system, so they will be unable to benefit from
reading the numbers and unable to generate numbers of their
own without your help. Better to stay with a simple sequential
system.
