Don't be too sure that no (proper) usability testing was done.

My husband and I have assembled many pieces of IKEA furniture of various
degrees of size and complexity, and we found everything we needed in the
instructions. If we had had to write a test report, it would have been
positive. Maybe the testers made our, rather than your, experiences?
On the other hand, I have thrown away instructions or manuals highly
recommended by others because, to me, they were meaningless.
