Actually, if I'm interviewing at your company, I will know exactly what the
management thinks about documentation before I walk out the door. I'm not
talking about big huge companies here. But, in a small startup when its me,
the boss, and the developer lead. I can make those decisions. After you have
a department in place, I would still take a look at the work, and if it
isn't up to what I think needs to be there, I know better than to take the
job.
If the company presents me with a poor set of documentation, I know it isn't
the writer's fault. It's the management's fault. And, as many times as I've
seen this and taken the job anyway just to get burned down the road, bad doc
is no longer ok. And, as much as the management might want to hire me to
clean it up, I know better.
I won't go into which tools take longer, or are better. That's not the point
of the post. The point of the post is that if you don't ASK, your WILL NOT
GET! So if you want anything, you better ask for it up front before you sign
the contract.
