TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
[most of looking for one kind of clothing in another kind's store analogy
snipped]
>I wrote them a long whiny e-mail asking why the entire store wasn't
>dedicated to semi-formal clothing (preferably in my size and in colors
>suitable for my complexion... we are *all* autumns, aren't we?) but they
>have refused to answer. Too embarassed to admit their own stupidity, I'm
>sure. Harrumph.
Great story, but if I understand your analogy, you're saying that as the
Gap is set up to sell casual clothing (and therefore visiting them for
semi-formal is your own mistake), the STC is somehow set up for
management, organization, and tools and visiting their conference for
technical issues is misguided, right?
If that's the case, why does the STC's own Web site define their mission
as, in part:
>Society Goals
>[snip]
>Report on new communication technologies, methods, and applications.
Analogies can be useful, but the Gap story is not applicable in this
discussion. The STC claims to offer something that's missing from their
conference, and people are rightfully objecting.
