The reason you need a lawyer is to establish a baseline for referrals to
other professional service providers when you need them. Picking a lawyer
out of the yellow pages will invariable get you an incompetent lawyer. And,
that lawyer won't know any competent lawyers to refer you to when you need
them.
A friend of mine was a kill the lawyers guy. But, when he started a
franchise business, I told him to get an attorney. That attorney found him a
CPA. And, when one of the kids got in trouble with the law, that attorney
referred him to a great attorney that made the problem go away. The initial
attorney, rewrote the franchise agreement, which later saved my friend's
bacon.
Now, me on the other hand, took a referral from a supervisor when I needed a
divorce attorney. These attorney's were not competent and messed the case up
so bad that nobody would take the case after I fired them. Needless to say I
lost everything needlessly. Get referrals from a competent and disinterested
source. The supervisor got a kickback. And, I quit working for him. As a
supervisor, do not involve yourselves in your employees divorces. I did
eventually find a great attorney who makes all my problems go away.
But, the day you need a lawyer, you only have one phone call. It is too late
to check around.
