When you install Acrobat 4 or 5, and you already have Microsoft Office installed, you get a neat little button in your Office application toolbars. When you click the button in Word, you get a Create PDF dialog that allows you to specify all kinds of neat stuff, like which heading levels should be converted to bookmarks in the PDF file, how you want Table of Contents entries hyperlinked, and so forth.

To get all of this functionality by printing to a PS file and running it through Distiller, you would have to do a lot of messy stuff either in your Word file or by manually editing the PS file.

On the other hand, in PowerPoint and Excel, you don't get much in the way of fancy functionality. Still, the buttons are there for you to use, and you may as well use them.
