I've also noticed that there is a somewhat different overall tone--hard to
define but very much there--in British and American manuals. I've been
given a British-originated doc a few times with the blithe assumption that a
few spelling changes, maybe some individual terms would be the whole thing,
half a day's work. Yeah, right. The spelling was easy to spot, and there
weren't a lot of differences in terminology at all (the hood/bonnet thing
didn't come into play in this particular case).
I agree with whoever suggesting getting a "native speaker" to go over the
doc, just as if it were a completely foreign language :) I'm pretty familiar
with British idiom, but that's not the same as being able to reproduce it.
