I've also noticed that there is a somewhat different overall tone--hard to define but very much there--in British and American manuals. I've been given a British-originated doc a few times with the blithe assumption that a few spelling changes, maybe some individual terms would be the whole thing, half a day's work. Yeah, right. The spelling was easy to spot, and there weren't a lot of differences in terminology at all (the hood/bonnet thing didn't come into play in this particular case).

I agree with whoever suggesting getting a "native speaker" to go over the doc, just as if it were a completely foreign language :) I'm pretty familiar with British idiom, but that's not the same as being able to reproduce it.
