I don't know if this counts as the downside of the salary curve,
but I had been steadily increasing my salary until this year. I
recently made the decision to take a staff position instead of
remaining a consultant, and that cut my salary by about 1/3 in
dollars per paycheck.
I did that for a couple of reasons, one of which was my feeling
that here in NJ the market wasn't going to sustain that fat con-
sulting salary forever. I had reached the top of the salary curve
pretty quickly and stayed there for about 3 years, during what I
still affectionately refer to as "The Good Years." But I had
noticed a downturn in the consulting salaries available in this
area, and although I was still getting calls for the high-end jobs
the high-end jobs seemed to be getting scarcer and scarcer.
So although I'm hardly underpaid and impoverished, I do make less
now than I did last year. I think my benefits package pretty well
makes up for it, or almost gets there.
