TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I work in India as a technical writer for a software company. I may migrate
to Australia next year, and want to know about the job scene there.
My total experience spans three years, out of which two were spent in
technical support (for graphics software). My last one year in technical
writing has involved writing help documentation for e-commerce projects,
editing white papers and case studies, and writing content for three
corporate websites. I have not really produced any large-scale "manuals" -
the biggest project was a 25-page primer or "concepts" guide for a software
product.
I work in MS Word most of the time, but am familiar with Robohelp 4.0. My
graphics background involves in-depth knowledge of Photoshop, QuarkXpress
and related software. (By education, I am a Printing Engineer.)
My biggest strengths are my organised presentation and my ability to learn
application software quickly. My language skills are above average.
I want to know how much value my experience will hold in Australia. I also
want to know if doing a course will significantly enhance my resume. (Since
there are no tech comm programs of value available in India, I will have to
resort to online courses which are pretty expensive for me.)
