There are also several free courses at
<http://www.barnesandnobleuniversity.com> that you can take to get your feet
wet. They're not as good as face to face instruction, but you can't beat
the price.

The "Introduction to Programming" course is a good starting place for
beginners. The instructor uses a form of pseudocode to demonstrate the
basic principles of programming without getting into the specifics of any
particular language. The class also explains the different types of
programming, including markup languages and scripting languages.

As far as the money part goes, I do recommend that
you take a one-semester class at the local junior
college, particularly if you've never programmed
before. Most JCs have an "Intro to OO programming
using C++/Java".

However, if you really are on a shoestring, Bruce
