<Michelle Deeprose asked: "Has anyone got any ideas as to how I can make
<bitmaps smaller without losing the clarity of the screen dumps?".
Why keep screen shots as bitmaps (.bmp format, etc.)?
Import .bmp files into Visio 6, save to a .vsd file, perform any cropping
and color redefinition, and then save as a .gif (or .png) file. Enjoy the
sharply reduced file size. (Certain low-text, plots shrink well with .wmf
or .emf.)
If you have Paint Shop Pro, can import the .bmp, and save as a .gif etc.
I've found the printed output of the .gif's to be comparably sharp, from PSP
or Visio, but curiously often find the on-screen version of the PSP-produced
.gif to be nearly illegible.
