:: I don't know how they would look in a Windows toolbar, but on
:: my father's lawnmower, they used the tortoise and the hare
:: (one like the running rabbit in the Visual Quickstart books) to
:: denote speed settings. Those two images seem to be easily
:: identifiable. I don't know if they would be understandable for
:: other cultures, but most people are familiar with the story.
So the tortoise denotes an increase, right? After all, it *did* win the
race... *vbg*
Graphics are hardly universal. Everyone has their own meaning for various
images. Some of these meanings are more "universal" than others due to
convention and conditioning (stop sign, skull and bones, lightning bolt,
etc.). If you can't think of a good set of pictographs to use, then create a
convention. Your users will understand as long as it's consistent and
somewhat related to what it is you're trying to identify. Plus, tool tips
are always there for help. :)
