So the tortoise denotes an increase, right? After all, it *did* win the
race... *vbg*

Graphics are hardly universal. Everyone has their own meaning for various
images. Some of these meanings are more "universal" than others due to
convention and conditioning (stop sign, skull and bones, lightning bolt,
etc.). If you can't think of a good set of pictographs to use, then create a
convention. Your users will understand as long as it's consistent and
somewhat related to what it is you're trying to identify. Plus, tool tips
are always there for help. :)
