First, I would think those symbols would already by
used, in a tape-emulating interface like Ann describes.
Second, I've already seen those symbols used for other
reasons -- i.e., in some cases the double arrows mean
"go all the way to the end" or "go all the way to the
last slide/page", rather than go faster. In other words,
they're being devalued by multiple usage conventions
already.
Third, my impression was that there were increments of
speed both faster and slower than "normal", rather than
directions of motion to control (for which, see "First, above").
