In a similar vein, the last time I temped (three years ago) I made $29/hour.
The agency charged $50.
On the salary issue, when a prospective employer starts talking about
salary, I ask "What did you have in mind?" A question can get you out of a
lot of tight spots without having to divulge anything. If they ask point
blank I try to mention a range: "In my last three jobs I made $48-50K." For
a real newbie with only one past assignment: "A little under $15 and hour."

On this topic, Christine Anameier noted: "... you mentioned a recruiter.
I wonder what kind of cut they're
taking on this deal. It's conceivable that the company may be offering a
more reasonable amount but the recruiter is taking a big chunk of it.)"
Just a little factoid for the newbies: The last time I hired a
temp/contractor through an agency (six months ago), I had to pay a
little over $30/hr and the TW received just under $17/hr. The agency was
taking a 45% slice for themselves.
YMMV
