TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
A while back, I interviewed with a company that has some fairly progressive
salary practices. They do annual adjustments to all employees to keep their
salaries inline with regional average salary changes. I forget the
technical HR term for this, but anyhow, when interviewing, they first
indicated the range they would be able to pay (42k to 56k if I recall) which
would vary based qualifications, etc.
Then, after telling me what they would be able to offer, they asked what I
was previously earning. Their logic, which they elaborated on, was fairly
simple. They would offer me what they thought was fair --an amount based on
market salary condiditons. The reason they asked to know what I was earning
previously was to be sure I wasn't going to be in a position to need more
money in the near future.
They wanted to be sure that if invested in me, that I would be able to stay
put at that salary for a while. They wanted to avoid situations where a
person with the expenses and bills of a 100k income didn't take a job at 50k
just to make ends meet, then bail as soon as a better opportunity arrived.
