Learning Java:

I recommend _Thinking in Java_ by Bruce Eckel for
learning Java. It assumes some general knowledge of
programming concepts, but no more. Quite thorough,
with lots of examples and self-paced examples. You can
buy the book or you can download an HTML version: see
www.bruceeckel.com for more info.

Learning HTML:
------------------
I recommend _Mastering HTML 4_ by Eric and Deborah Ray
(published by Sybex). Again, it's quite thorough,
doesn't assume any previous knowledge, and has lots of
examples. There are also many good web sites with
tutorials, such as www.htmlgoodies.com and
www.webmonkey.com (check techwr-l archives for more).

Good luck!

./Scott
