My current employer regards compensation as confidential information, not
to be shared with other employees or other parties. My previous employers
in the business world have regarded compensation the same way. And that is
my response to the question. "It is private information between me and my
employer. I will not disclose it to you, any more than I would disclose
confidential information about my employment here to anyone else." After
all, if they want me to keep their confidential information confidential,
they should respect that others regard information as confidential, too.
If pressed, I have respond that "I can tell you that it is (below, around,
above) the market rate for someone with my experience." And I cite a range
based on salary surveys and discussions with recruiters at professional
meetings. That has generally been satisfactory.
If it's not, I have to wonder if this is a company I want to work for.
Strictly my own experience and opinion.
