First, why would you assume we have no "fricking" idea what the benefits really cost? My employer puts it in the job description? And second, why shouldn't total compensation count? My employer pays a certain percent of my salary toward retirement. They pay for my health insurance and half of my dependents'. Yes, I *do* realize they "pay" these in lieu of paying me a higher salary. That's why it has to count... what if the next employer offers me a $5000 raise but it costs me $10,000 to lose those benefits?

I agree. But I disagree with your assumption that deliberately misleading someone in order to make that money is therefore also ethical.
If it's OK to give such a generous salary "range," would it also be appropriate to give an equally generous range of experience? Should I claim to have 5 years of experience when in fact I only have 3? Should I claim to be MCSE (or is it MSCE) certified when in fact I am only about halfway there? If I know I can do the job, nothing else matter, does it? It's all in the same range, right? One should say whatever necessary in order to make more money, right?
And when you found out I "tacked on qualifiers to indicate a range" to make it look like I had more experience than I really had, would you pat me on the back for having the cojones to do it? Or would you call me a miserable little liar?
