TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My experience with the vendor of mif2go was actually pretty good.
However, I communicated with them only through e-mail and there was a
time when they were swamped, so some of my more mundane comments weren't
addressed.
They are a small outfit and are experiencing the growing pains
associated with their success. This is reflected in their documentation.
This does not mean that it is a bad product or that you can't use it. I
mean, some of the problems I had were truly "pilot error". Once things
were straight in the cockpit, I'm ready to go.
Hence, I question your statements about depending on a vendor for
technical support and service. How much hand-holding do you really need?
We're just talking about converting files here.
BTW, mif2go converts from FrameMaker to other formats. I don't recall it
stating you could go from Word to FrameMaker. It would be a mess anyway.
I figure that FM is my source; I export to RTF for other people to
mark-up and review; I locate their changes (with Word's document
compare) and then copy their few modifications over the clipboard to get
them back into FM.
