1) If you are having trouble, use File|Print to print a *.prn or *.ps using
the Distiller printer instance, which you then Distill using Adobe Distiller
to create a PDF.
This method appears to work for you, stick with it.
2) If you use Save as PDF, there are limitations. Firstly, Save as PDF uses
your default printer. So, you must set the Distiller printer instance as
your default printer beforehand. Then, Save as PDF also uses your Default
Distiller settings.
If you are having trouble with this, chances are the wrong printer is set as
your default. Save as PDF also restricts page size customizations for the
PDF, if you care about that. All-in-all, File|Print gives you more control.
(I use Save as all the time and am quite happy with it. True FrameMaker
gurus poo-poo Save as PDF, though.)
