Subject:Self building index for online help files From:"Dugas, Andrew" <ADugas -at- eTranslate -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Mon, 30 Jul 2001 14:48:41 -0700
We have a modular product, each module of which has its own online help. The
problem is that the user cannot easy travel between the help modules, though
that may be just s/he might have to do.
I'm trying to sell the one big help file (when you add a module, you get all
new help), but the engineer wants a system that will read the individual
help files and dynamically create a merged TOC and index.
Has anyone out there ever developed such a system? (Isn't this what XML/SGML
is supposed to accomplish?) Or does anyone know of a product that does
something like this? I think it's a cool idea, but I feel while merged TOCs
and indices are all good, this wouldn't allow for cross-module related links
("For more information, see also...") on individual help pages.
