>I'm not bothered by being occupied with a hobby at work. Quite the
>reverse: it feels like a more integrated life. The idea that work and
>private life are distinct is extremely common in industrial society, but
>I seriously doubt that it makes for mentally healthy individuals.
I had such jobs for nearly eight years, when I worked on my PhD thesis and
on an assistantship in astrophysics. Astrophysics has been my hobby since
longer than I can remember, and during these years - which I truly enjoyed
-, I could hardly ever put my work out of my head.
Leaving astrophysics was not an easy decision, but now, two years later, I
am glad to have work I am far less fond off; work I can leave in my office
when I go home.
I love writing, which is why I became a tech writer instead of a software
developer, but while I do write in my free time, and while the things I
have learnt at my job have influenced the way I write, I have never thought
of writing a user's guide.
