When I was an independent consultant, I had a six-month contract with a
international fraud investigator certification organization whereby I had to
read all types of white-collar crime/fraud cases and summarize them to one
page each...fascinating reading (moral of each story: you'll eventually get
caught, no matter how "novel" the scheme). Recently, I took on a freelance
project whereby I was the book designer for a book written by the executive
director of that fraud organization (book title: "Frankensteins of Fraud:
The 10 Worst Fraud Cases of the Century").
Several years ago, I was brought in by a company to help them document
procedures for operating equipment that manufactured disposable diapers.
They had 2 assembly lines and each line was capable of creating 120 LARGE
cases of disposable diapers per hour. The company was located about 2 hours
from my home, so they let me work from home using one of the pioneering
remote access software applications. All I had to do was show up at the
plant once a month for 2 or 3 days for meetings, observe workers at their
stations at the machines, conduct some training, etc. They put me up in a
nice hotel, paid for all expenses...I was truly...ok...forgive
me...."pampered."
