Subject:Frame Workshop dead? and where to spend money? From:KMcLauchlan -at- chrysalis-its -dot- com To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 5 Sep 2001 09:40:04 -0400
G'day all.
I'm looking for some suggestions.
I had registered for the annual FrameUsers
/C/o/n/f/e/r/e/n/c/e/ er... Workshop (October),
and was in the middle of making the travel arrangements
when I learned that the Conf had been cancelled.
(There still hasn't been an official announcement,
but the presenters are saying that they received
word on Friday.)
That leaves me with a chunk of company budget
that I need to spend on training/professional dev.,
real-soon-now... or lose it.
I work with FrameMaker, and I was planning to take
the XML pre-workshop -- on spec, since we don't use
XML for anything, yet... But, if that session had
been full, I'd likely have gone for the Indexing
workshop or one of the PDF workshops, as a close
second choice.
Prior to our recent layoffs I was looking at
"management skills" training, but that's out
the window for at least a year or two (it'll be
that long before we hire anybody I could supervise/manage).
So, I'd appreciate it if folks could let me know
of training/workshop opportunities in the next couple
of months. Someone already suggested Seybold, but
even though there's an XML session, I'm finding
it a tough sell to the boss. This year, I can't
justify "industry trends" and "meet and greet"
get-togethers. The IPCC offering looks kinda thin,
(even fluffier than STC) though I'd LOVE to visit Santa Fe :-)
(and I'm not a member anyway...).
I'm already taking a C++ brush-up course at the
local college, on my own dime.
If nothing else pops up, I'll look for the nearest
stop on Shlomo Perets' travelling Acrobat road show
and sign up for that.
Please consider replying privately, to avoid
contravening any advertising strictures for the list.
I'll summarize if I get any interesting suggestions.
Thanks,
Kevin (spend it or lose it) McLauchlan
