Can techwhirlers have a role in the current crisis?

On another list, a colleague reported: <<A mosque in Montreal was firebombed
this morning, just one incident in a global wave of anti-Islamic violence.
Please, everybody, be careful. People aren't thinking any more; anything can
happen.>>
And so it begins... Let me second that recommendation, and add to it. It's
natural to start looking on anyone foreign as a threat. But let's remember
that none of these people were actually involved, we still don't know who
was actually responsible, and all of these people are going to come in for
some scary days ahead as their neighbors, colleagues, and former friends
start looking on them with suspicion--or worse. Don't be part of that. Help
them, reassure them, and above all, don't let any racist hatred pronounced
in your presence stand unchallenged, particularly in print. The guilty will
be caught. Let's leave the innocents in peace. It's no memorial for the dead
to surround them with more dead innocents.
