Hi,
Once I created some online help with a link in the same place (below the topic name). It said something like "View XYZ Window). When the user clicked on it they got a full screen shot in a popup window. I think layering is the way to go. If the user does not need to see it they can skip over it and not lose online help real estate. Just like a popup for a term they may or may not know.
