I prefer not to see a step number prefixed with any word, such as "step." It
clutters up the page. I want to see the next number, or to pick out a number
referred to in the text. For example, if an instruction says that if I have no
elephants I should proceed to step 7, I want to be able to pick out the number
7. If "step" precedes every number, it makes them all look similar.
