Proportioning is the use of a key that indicates in which database a range
of data can be found.
When new applications are created, they tend to use newer versions of a
database, but the data still resides on older versions of a database, or on
another vendor's database. For small sets of current data, the data is
usually ported. But, when only a small portion of the records in a huge
database are going to be accessed. Porting does not make sense.
The application can be written to read and write records to both databases,
but to do that the application must have a means of knowing which databases
to query and which queries to use. The Proportioning key is the means to do
this.
