Thanks for your comments. Are you saying that a text field cannot contain text? That flies in the face of common sense.
It turned out that the problem was internal to HTML (maybe a language problem, maybe a browser problem--haven't looked into it yet) and had nothing to do with Access, ASP, MS Jet SQL, or VB Script. I found an ugly workaround that I am _not_ proud of. But in any case, I'm chalking this one up to experience and moving on to the next challenge.
