In my experience, that attitude stems from a gross misunderstanding
of us and our occupation coupled with arrogance. I used to work with
a developer whose vision of the world was divided into programmers and
everybody else. He could never understand that I knew how to program
but had chosen not to. Your help desk buddies, proud of their own
technical stature, obviously can't understand why you would choose
not to join them (or, once one of them, why you would choose to leave).
And please don't tell them how much we make! We'll keep that our
little secret.
