No, actually making that assumption would be no more legal (or ethical, in
my opinion). If the candidate states that is his or her intention, that's
one thing. Your making that assumption is something else. You would, in that
case, be responding to your own pre-conceived notions (and in the US,
breaking the law). It may be that church related activities occupy much of
their time outside of work, hence the reference to religion. Having strong
religious convictions does not make one a poor employee or a poor team
member, nor does it indicate that someone will spend their time seeking
converts.
Would you assume particular patterns of behavior if a candidate were Hindu
or Buddhist or Muslim? If so, you would miss out on the opportunity to hire
some excellent folks, including some who are devout Christians. (And
possibly get your butt sued to boot).
