TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Once burned, twice shy. When I see a résumé that lacks dates of employment, my first instinct is to drop it in the circular file (and when was the last time any of you saw a round wastebasket?). If I can overcome my first instinct, I'm still likely to place it at the bottom of the pile. I've been burned by people who had an impressive list of previous jobs that turned out all to have been of short duration. (I have nothing against contractors who get in, do the job, and get out. These were instances where someone got in, didn't do the job, and was asked to leave.) Because it is so hard to get honest information from previous employers about the reason someone left, I just shy away from these résumés.
