Re: Breaking into the home biz...
Hi fellow members, and Win,
I've been recently laid off due to the terrorist attacks. I've been
employed as a Technical Writer for over 3 years and recently added Web
Design to my portfolio. I'm wondering how to break into the freelance or
contractor biz. I've been searching the Internet job boards for over 3
weeks now and have had no success. I'm located in the Chicagoland area.
Any ideas or help are welcome! Thank you.
Look in as many different places as possible. Use your connections. Make cold calls. Keep trying.
There's really not much else to suggest. People who break into contracting aren't necessarily the best writers, but they are set apart by their persistence.
Three weeks isn't really that long a time in this job market - although it may be long enough for you, of course, if you need the income. Eighteen months ago, you could get a new job in three weeks, but now most people are taking 6 or even 12 weeks, and many are taking longer.
