Subject:RE: Import by reference/copy into documents From:"Roy, Gary" <RoyG -at- hydroaire -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Mon, 22 Oct 2001 09:25:17 -0700
Here are some advantages to linking the graphic files by reference:
- Revisions to the imported graphics are facilitated since overwriting the
externally linked graphic files will automatically update the image in the
Framemaker document.
- The file size gets exponentially larger as you copy graphics directly into
the Framemaker document. When the .fm document reached a couple of hundred
megabytes, it may be difficult to open, navigate or print.
- A single graphic can be linked by multiple Framemaker documents without
copying the graphic file into each document, which will use less storage
space and update all occurrences of the image in the Framemaker documents.
You can always send postscript or PDF files for external reproduction, or
include the graphics directory and Framemaker file on the storage media.

I've always thought you are supposed to copy imorted graphics into the
document in Frame. I guess I thought you needed them, in some mysterious
way, when you create a file to send out for printing.
Why is it preferable to import by reference. When should you copy into
document, and when should you import by reference.
TIA
