Another case of "violent agreement," I think.
Having been a systems programmer for over five years definitely gave me a
strong base for my tech writing, but if my technical learning had stopped
there, I wouldn't be here today. Learning new stuff and maintaining our
curiosity is what keeps the job fun.
But methodologies do come and go. Sometimes the same methodology comes back
in a different package. Big deal. I like new toys as much as the next
person, and I do resent being told that I can only play with the box while
someone else gets to play with what's inside the box. And then, another new
toy comes along. Like Diane Evans, I remember blue pencils and light tables,
but I was more into yellow pads and #2 pencils myself at that time.<G>
I do think our audiences will be different in 20 years. That, too, is part
of what keeps it interesting. And I think that is also what will keep us
employed. But in 25 years, I suspect that there's a good chance that I'll be
doing something else... and I hope it's not just pushing up daisies!
