Thanks.<
I'm a department head who reports to the VP of marketing, and I like it. As
in most companies, the role of marketing here goes well beyond sales
support: marketing includes determining the customer and product
requirements and making the final call on timelines. By participating in
marketing staff meetings and interacting with this VP, I have a very long
view into what documentation is going to be required and when, and get
quicker knowledge of direction changes that may affect existing docs.
Marcomm was outsourced before I came on board. In general, whether a
document request is considered marcomm or techcomm is a combination of where
the product is in the development cycle and the audience. Roughly speaking,
if the product doesn't exist yet, and/or is aimed at high-level
decision-makers rather than developers, it's marcomm. When a doc request
falls in a gray area, I just talk it through with the marcomm firm to decide
who does it.

Jim
