"this" being the tendency of unions to defend people against wrongful
dismissal.
I can't send you to concrete evidence, although I'm sure it's out there. I
got this information from my partner who works in employment law and has
worked on the side of lawyers and unions.
It's a double-edged sword. Union members have certain rights, which include
the right to defence against wrongful dismissal. There's generally nothing
in the union contract which requires the union management to make a judgment
on whether or not it truly was a "wrongful" dismissal.
Don't get me wrong. I don't object to unions. In fact, I strongly support
unions for many types of employees, especially those who earn low-wages and
are expected to work long hours. There are still lots of people in the US
that fall into that category, such as janitorial workers and many who work
for large retail chains. I just don't think that a union has anything to
offer a technical writer at this point in time.
