Even Bruce's explanation seems closer to marketing spin than reality. Most
unions don't go to bat for employees at all. I've seen ethnic discrimination
and gender discrimination that unions wouldn't touch. More times than I can
count I've seen reasons to can somebody manufactured. Most unions know they
are treading on thin ice here in the states, and don't want to ruffle
employers feathers any more than they have to.
Sure in larger negotiations they'll push back, but if the employer wants a
person gone, the union usually won't get in the way--the union is more
afraid of losing the whole shop. At least that's been my experience in
California with knowing people in several unions-- Police, Fire, Machinists,
Teamsters, SEIU, Retail Clerks.
Reading all these posts makes me think not to many people on list have
actually worked in or with a union lately. Either that or my experience here
in CA is an anomaly.
