TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
"A theory for your delectation:"
............................
Great Word! Merriam-Webster says it's from the 14th century, which is, well,
"delectable"! Unfortunately, the m-w website offered no further etymology. I
wonder whether the word has some origin in reading... the root "lect," after
all, would suggest so. I'm sure we have enough word-origin mavens out there
to fill in that gap.
The tie-in to tech writing, obviously, is the need to suit the vocabulary to
the audience. In _Dynamics in Document Design_, Karen Schriver talks about
how teenagers laughed about an adult-written and reviewed brochure on drugs
because, among other things, the brochure used the wrong words or used the
right words in the wrong context. And we laugh, somewhat uneasily, when
marketing jargon creeps into technical docs and vice-versa.
OK, now back to work!
