Subject:Re: Linux at work (real world) + and at HOME From:Ed -dot- Hawco -at- acecomm -dot- com To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Tue, 20 Nov 2001 16:44:27 -0500
I'd like to take a slightly different tack on this discussion. We've
discussed using Linux at work, and interoperability issues. Neither is a
concern for me, as I have this NT box at the office and nothing's going to
change that (it's a company standard).
My concern is with using Linux at home, which I would love to do. I have
very few sharing issues. (I have a desktop and a laptop and I'd like for
them to talk to each other, but I suspect that would be easy.) My big
concern is hardware and peripherals! I have the impression that you have to
jump through a lot of hoops to get a Linux box to work with garden-variety
(read: Windows-oriented) peripherals. Hopefully, I've been mislead.
My question, then: If I install Linux (such as RedHat) on my machine at
home, will it be able to work with my:
- Epson inkjet printer
- scanner
- digital camera
- ZIP drive
- CD R/RW
- DVD-ROM
- sound card
- Palm handheld
?
