Anila:
This group has already sent you some excellent
feedback, especially about audience and testing.
Perhaps I can add a little value. I am in the process
of reading:
I think it's "generic" enough to apply to most newbie
research. Here's the editorial review (of which, so
far, I agree): "...It describes the grammar, style,
techniques and tricks needed to write a manual the
gets read. It explains how to understand and target
readers. Plus, it covers special topics including:
dealing with rush projects, preparing for
internationalization, and handling projects with
multiple writers, multiple platforms and multiple
bosses...."
I also have in my "Save for later" cart at Amazon.com:
I can't give yoy my personal opinion yet--in fact, I
don't know if I'll ever buy it--but it got very good
reviews, and it has been updated from the original
1984 edition to include quality management standards
compliance. Twenty-two reviewers gave it four and a
half stars.
Writing online help isn't quite so generic, as it
depends on the tool, but both HTML Help and RoboHelp
are extremely easy to learn/use. I have a book by
William Horton on "Designing and Writing Online
Documentation: Help Files to Hypertext" but I think
it's out of print.
...Oddly enough, a search on Amazon.com for "online
help" produced a lot of books on cyber-flirting,
choosing an online therapist, and breaking free of
compulsive online sexual behavior <vbg>.
