Download Eval copies and learn on these first, then you know if it is any
good. If a company doesnt have a eval copy www.abortext.com (xml program
Epic) is an example of this, send them an email and ask for one and they
will send you a copy on CD.

I have found it the best way to learn any software, expecially if the
company you ar working for asks you to evaluate a software program(s) you
dont want to buy 4 programmes and then only use one.

Most software programmes can be found at www.download.com

Hope this helps.

Is it customary for technical writers to buy software themselves to load on
their PCs in order to learn that particular software? I have bought RoboHelp
and FrameMaker, and I am thinking of buying Photoshop.
Or, do most technical writers find more clever and less costly ways to pick
up skills? If so, what are these ways?
