You raise an interesting point, Keith, and not just for this list. I, too, hear
from people offlist from time to time. I'm never quite sure whether it is worth
it to tie up the bandwidth just to say, "Thanks" when someone writes me a note
about something I've written or posted or whether to let it be. (Of course,
sometimes you get into a dialogue offline, which is a whole different thing.)
Certainly, it would seem the polite thing to do to acknowledge that you
received something from someone else, as in the cases you mentioned in your
post (not reproduced in this reply). At the same time, it seems to annoy some
people when you tie up bandwidth with a short message that merely acknowledges
some comment received from someone else. It's hard to know where to draw the
line, though I guess being polite would be better than being silent and, hence,
thought rude.
