TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The question before the committee is whether or not Bruce Goett should join
STC.
Bruce, you're going to get a range of opinions; that's the beauty of this list.
On the one hand, STC is a fine professional organization. It probably doesn't
hurt to have a professional organization on your resume. I think that under the
right set of circumstances you can get a lot of networking opportunities. Just
because a job board is barren at the moment doesn't mean it will always be
barren. And their magazine can be very interesting and useful.
On the other hand, I have survived without an STC membership for ten years. I
used to be a member, but when I left the job where they were paying for the
membership, I didn't keep it up. I don't think I've ever lost a job because I
wasn't an STC member. Some people (I neither endorse nor disagree with this
position) think the STC is more interested in things involving process and
typefaces and fonts than it is in developing usable content and meeting the
delivery needs both of employers and customers.
Personally, it's 6:5 and pick 'em. Have a nice day.
