Shavon-
While you're working on your tech writing courses, keep your eye out for
entry-level jobs. Don't miss out on opportunities just because you're not
officially "certified" or whatever.
Unless there's more money in vacuum cleaners than I know about, even
entry-level tech writing jobs tend to pay a comfortable salary, and you'd
be getting on-the-job experience to reinforce what your classes teach you.
The job market is tight right now, but you should do some scanning for job
openings anyway. My first tech writing opportunity came while I was taking
classes, and I didn't feel quite ready to consider myself a tech writer
yet. But I sent a resume, got an interview, and went to the interview just
to get some practice at interviewing. Lo and behold they hired me, and
suddenly I was an "official" tech writer!
I was fortunate that there was an entry-level opportunity. But I'm glad I
went for it, because I learned SO much at that first job; more than I'd
ever learn in a classroom.
Good luck!
