Steve Hudson wrote: "The EEC has declared that all works to be sold in the
EEC must support all the official EEC languages."
This is, as far as I know, not true. I live and work in Germany, one of the
members of the EC. At the moment the "DIRECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
AND OF THE COUNCIL on machinery, 98/37/EC" is still valid. This directive
mentions demands for technical documentation for machinery to be sold in a
country which is part of the EC. But it is only valid for machinery. There
is no directive valid for software.
And it is not true that all official European languages have to be
supported.
To quote the proposal for a new version of this directive:
"The manufacturer or his authorised representative must draft the
instructions in an official Community language."
That means you only have to translate your manual into the official language
of the country to which you deliver your machine, not into all official
European languages.
