This is, IMHO, a rather chicken and the egg problem.
Does playing role-playing games make good technical writers or are good
technical writers just creative people who will exercise their creativity
however they are able?
I play role-playing games (for the uninitiated - there are as many role
playing games out there are there are email applications! And like email
applications, one particular brand is very popular). I also write
role-playing material. My first book should be published this spring.
I also write fiction and enjoy editing and laying out both my work and the
work of others. I've writing reviews, editorials as well as creative content
for role-playing.
So my vote is that technical writers tend to be creative. That creativity
will come out in numerous ways: including writing in other venues.
My 2 cents
