Word's layout engine uses the current printer's page definitions to base the
document layout on. This causes all sorts of strange nonsenses - including
the very common variety you are experiencing. This is actually covered in a
nice article on www.mvps.org/word, a thoroughly recommended first port of
call for any Word strangeness.
Anyway, the solution is to increase your margin sizes to the point where the
printer's borders can jump around a bit and the change stays OUTSIDE your
layout area.

strange contortions and extra pages to be inserted.
