TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Styles are extremely important if you are using Word's TOC feature, which
you typically would for many technical documents created in Word. Any error
in applying a style in this case would immediately be evident. Styles are
also very important if you are preparing a Word document that will be
imported into another program (e.g. PageMaker, Quark, Frame). I am extremely
diligent in applying styles properly in these cases.
However, it's not clear that creating a style for a header that will be used
once or twice in a document such as a resume is particularly effective in
saving time. Nevertheless, I will be sure to look at my resume in the same
way I do a manuscript from now on.
